First when taking photos of someone, you need to study their faces. The face is important for the angle you are going to take the picture. Even though it's a cliche, it's true that some people have a better side. This can be related to scarring or acne or even simpler. For example, my left eye is bigger than my right with just a little, and looking directly at the camera will cause a terrible portrait, but if the photographer comes from the right side and slightly tilted up the light and shadow will help flatten the features while keeping the difference that makes me myself.
Portrait Photography is about capturing the essence of the subject, personality. The small nuances of the face add character to the portrait. You will want to relax your subject. If you are a professional portrait photographer, you will want to study your subject when you take photos or maybe meet before the session. If they are only your family then you have to know what will make their personality recorded in the film.
Lighting is the next important step for Portrait Photography. Many photographers prefer natural light to artificial. Some of your subjects will decide this for you. Remember you will use the light you have. Natural light will often require aperture settings to compensate for the lack of a camera definition. In other words you have to make a contrast with light and shadow for the effect you want. Often the artificial light is loud and not directed properly except in the studio. Again you have to use manual settings on your camera to make perfect portraits.
Background is also important when discussing light. In the studio, a photographer will choose a background that will not eliminate your features or clothes. They want to have a difference or contrast between you and the background. This is also important from home portrait photography. You will want a background that gives color to your subject instead of taking it away. Finding a good place with trees to occupy and mountains in the background can be good portraits, but you should make sure the background isn't too busy to distract from the subject. Make the subject appear separate from the image rather than outside.
The type of camera and film you use will also determine the quality of photography. After you combine techniques such as lighting, angles, and understanding your subject, you will be able to make a portrait that is close to professional if it is not professional for your friends and family at any opportunity. Just shooting is possible, but would it be better to have a better portrait?
