Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving: Every year America has a holiday in November that almost always respects what we call Thanksgiving. We give this holiday so much honor that it ranks with us along with Christmas and Easter as important holidays in the hearts of families and as a nation. But this holiday, which is so rich in tradition, began in the early days of the founding of this nation.

The early years of explorers to come to the American continent were indeed difficult. The explorers, we now call The Pilgrims, face bad weather, unexpected relationships with the natives, diseases, and other challenges when they carve out the wilderness houses they find here. Because their earliest home is in the northeast, winters are very hard and their ability to build houses that can keep them warm and to find enough food is a constant concern for men and women who are trying to raise families in America.

So whenever they receive help from the natives, it is seen as a gift from God and is received with joy and celebration. A Native American chieftain named Squanto saw the situation of these new neighbors and made sure that his tribe helped these young families to survive. In addition to providing food and wisdom on how to build structures that can keep them safe in winter, Squanto teaches them to fish, how to prepare eels and other strange sea creatures that they harvest and how to farm.

This act of friendship is the origin of the Thanksgiving holiday that we respect. The Virginia Colony established the tradition of holding a day of collective prayer of thanksgiving, and that tradition continues to this day. Except it's not just a day of thanksgiving for the kindness and generosity of Squanto to our ancestors. We use this day of respect and thanksgiving to give thanks for all the good things that God has blessed for this nation.

The food we use to celebrate Thanksgiving is food found by pilgrims from this country and food that, with the help of Native American teachers, they learn to catch, harvest, and prepare to feed their families and welfare in their new home . Turkey is a violation of the game that supplies pilgrims very much once Squanto shows them how to injure the bird with reliable success.

The vegetables we like on our traditional menu also come from the early life of pilgrims. Potatoes, cranberries, sweet potatoes, green beans and the rest are vegetables that pilgrims must learn to harvest, plant, and prepare from the native population of the country. So in many ways, our modern holidays, apart from the dominance of soccer matches and upcoming Christmas holidays, still maintain the atmosphere of those early celebrations.

And the meaning of the holidays, despite commercialization, has been maintained. Americans must be grateful. The abundance of land, the health of the most prosperous economy on earth and a free society capable of encouraging freedom in other cultures are some of the things we celebrate during this holiday. But for most of us, this is a time to gather family and close friends and thank God for our health, for the blessings of work and for the privilege all Americans share in being able to live in the greatest country on earth where enough opportunities are there any of us can succeed and succeed if we work hard in our chosen field of expertise. And these are things that really are worthy of being thankful for.
