History of Abraham Lincoln: We want to think that all our presidents of the United States are truly great people and that for sure, just handling the extraordinary responsibilities of the presidency requires a special kind of individual. But of the few men who have held that position, some have stood out because of their extraordinary achievements and leadership in a time that changed the country forever. And one of these truly great presidents is Abraham Lincoln. Perhaps more than any other president, Lincoln had to deal with internal civil war which was far more than shouting and calling names. This is a dispute that can destroy the country in two and initiate divisions that can lead to dozens of weak independent countries and not the strongest country we know as America today.

Lincoln's leadership, his commitment to values and his strong moral fiber made it possible for America to find its way through the war and then begin the healing process which will eventually bring the nation back to unity once again. Lincoln's tenure from 1860 to his death was a considerable challenge. If he only had a problem dealing with efforts by the south to succeed from the union and its ability to keep those countries as part of America's national territory, he would be praised as a great American.

One of the few known leadership styles that Lincoln used for his advantage in his presidential organization was the appointment of talented national figures from political parties who opposed being part of his cabinet. Lincoln felt that he needed to have a close adviser from the opposite point of view to keep his presidency not isolated from the American people and one side. By gathering members of the "loyal opposition" into his circle of beliefs, Lincoln is always aware of both sides of each issue which makes him a stronger leader.

But that is not even the greatest achievement or the one we remember the most. His bold and unchanging rejection of slavery was without doubt his greatest contribution to American history and also to world history as well. When he was willing to risk everything to stop this savage social sin, Lincoln made a stand, opposed the general opinion at that time in many cases that he would be the one who ended slavery.

It's not a stand that comes at no cost. Civil war is one of the bloodiest and most expensive in the history of the nation if there is no other reason than all victims; on both sides are victims of America. It took decades for the terrible war damage to be repaired. Divisions between the north and the south have continued for decades and are still part of our national personality in this country.

But the end result was what Lincoln wanted as his inheritance. By issuing the Emancipation Proclamation to end slavery as permanent, Lincoln followed up with the enactment of the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments which made the freedom fought for and won in the Civil War permanent.

And his face on Mount Rushmore is worthy so the mountain itself cries out, this is one of the greatest leaders in the history of this great country.
